Depression

Depression in pregnancy can occur for either simple or complex reasons. Hormonal changes affect both your emotional and physical state, and can cause exhaustion and mood wings. Having a baby involves changes in your personal circumstances, there is a loss of freedom and old, buried fears and concerns may surface at this time. Symptoms of depression are negative feelings, mood swings, or detachment, disturbed sleep, panic attacks, and changes in appetite.

Key tips on coping with depression
- discuss your feelings with a counselor or friend

Diet and Nutrition

- eat zinc rich foods such as eggs, sunflower seeds, and whole breads
- boost intake of Vitamin c and B complex
- avoid sugar foods
- avoid stimulants, such as caffeine, cigarettes, and alcohol

Complementary Treatments

Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine
- it encourages the release of neurotransmitters in the brain that relieve depressive symptoms

Yoga
- the breathing techniques and postures balance the mind and body, thus leading to physical relaxation and spiritual well being

Aromatherapy
- add to bath, vaporize or add to massage oil neroli, mandarin, grapefruit, lavender, or rose

Homeopathy
- for depression with mood swings, Ignatia 30c
- for tearfulness that is worse from heat, Pulsatilla 30c
